It is recommended that interdental brushes be used in addition to brushing teeth as part of your daily oral health routine starting at age 12. Some people may not have enough space between their teeth to use an interdental brush, so flossing can be a useful alternative.
How to floss
Dental floss is a thin, soft thread. Don't be too aggressive with flossing: you risk damaging your gums. The main effect of flossing is a firm but gentle scraping of the tooth from top to bottom.
What if my gums bleed?
When you first start flossing, your gums may be sensitive and bleed a little. Continue to floss as recommended and the bleeding should stop as your gums become healthier. If you are still having regular bleeding after a few days, contact your dentist who can check that you are flossing correctly.
