Many of us suffer from dandruff – either as a result of a dry scalp or more stubborn types of dandruff. In fact, dandruff can have many different causes and therefore there are also many different ways to combat it. We have collected the best tips and product recommendations that can help you get rid of dandruff and give you a healthy and beautiful scalp.
Different causes of dandruff
The first step in treating dandruff is to figure out what type of dandruff you have and what is causing the dandruff. Here is an overview of the most common causes of dandruff.
Dry scalp
Most people will notice tiny, dry flakes as a result of a dry scalp. It can come with the change of seasons, especially in the winter months when the air is dry. It can also be due to washing your hair too often, for example if your skin is sensitive to your shampoo, or you bathe in very hot water.
A dry scalp can usually be quickly rebalanced with a good dandruff shampoo that will restore moisture to the scalp. Also, try a shampoo without SLS (Sodium Laureth Sulfate) – a soapy substance that makes the product lather but also dries it out.
Dandruff
The skin and scalp are always covered with a natural yeast that helps regulate skin renewal. Many things can cause an overgrowth of this yeast, causing more skin cells to form in the scalp and the overstimulated skin renewal suddenly turns into lots of visible flakes.
If you have psoriasis, it can help to take care of your immune system with a healthy lifestyle (sensible sleep, sensible diet and as stress-free activities as possible). In addition, excessive fungal growth can be practically combated with tar-containing shampoo.
The fungus thrives best in a moist scalp, please see our tips for a healthy scalp below.
Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a common, hereditary skin disease that comes in many forms. Some do not know they even have it, others typically have greasy flakes on the scalp and the worst sufferers are severely affected by itchy, greasy flakes on various areas of the body.
Remember that you may have a combination of these types of dandruff, and it is a very good idea to consult a doctor or skin specialist if you suspect that the dandruff is caused by eczema and psoriasis, which often require prescription treatment.

Tips for a healthy scalp
No matter what type of dandruff you have, good scalp care is a good starting point for your dandruff treatment
Skip washing your hair
Avoid washing your hair too often. Use a good dry shampoo so you can postpone washing your hair for a day or two.

Dry hair thoroughly
Avoid sleeping with damp hair. It increases drying time and prevents moisture from escaping, which worsens dandruff. After bathing and washing hair, care should always be taken to air-dry or blow-dry thoroughly to allow the skin to breathe.
Allow the scalp to air out
Also, avoid wearing a hat or putting your hair up when it’s damp. Hats prevent hair from drying properly, and the same goes for putting your hair back in a rubber band or clip.

Prevent
If you are prone to dandruff, use a preventative anti-dandruff shampoo or other gentle shampoo.

Effective mask against dandruff
In addition to a nourishing dandruff shampoo, you can also treat your scalp to a wonderful mask that cleanses and nourishes without drying it out. You can make it yourself as follows:
- Carefully heat 1 dl coconut oil in a small pan until it becomes liquid and then remove from the heat. It should only be lukewarm.
- Massage the mixture into the scalp (if your hair is dry) and leave it overnight.
- Remember to put a towel on the pillow to protect it from the oil. Wash it out the next day with a gentle shampoo.
Use the mask every day until you feel that the dandruff is noticeably reducing. If dandruff returns, you can then use the mask as a preventative measure.
You can also use a ready-made solution from Moroccanoil, which is very easy to start with and has a wonderful and beneficial effect on the scalp. Moroccanoil Dry Scalp Treatment contains geranium and salicylic acid, among other things, which are good against dandruff.
