If you want to do your own bridal makeup or have a friend help you, here is a do-it-yourself guide on how to create a classic and natural yet stunning look.

Although makeup tastes vary from person to person, many brides want a simple look on their big day that goes with a white wedding dress.

We’ll show you the best (and quickest) way to prepare your skin for makeup, show you the simplest techniques and introduce you to products that will make your makeup last day and night.

Skin care is key

If you want to have an even and flawless makeup on the big day, it’s important that you take care of your skin beforehand. Well-groomed skin is the key to perfect makeup, so take a little extra time in the days before your wedding to nourish your skin with plenty of moisture.

Start a few weeks before the wedding with a good moisturizing mask that you use once a week.

Although as a bride you’re very busy and very excited about the wedding, which means you don’t sleep much at night, you can’t underestimate the importance of beauty sleep. If you ever find yourself having trouble sleeping, you can soothe your puffy eyes and reduce bags under your eyes with an eye cream or eye serum.

A few good tips

  • Try to avoid deep cleansing treatments as much as possible in the week before the wedding, as the skin can be particularly sensitive when stressed.
  • Do not put on the wedding dress until you have completely finished your makeup on the wedding day. There should be no makeup residue left on the dress.
  • It is almost always best to choose a classic makeup, either with gold, brown or pink tones. It gives the best result if you plan to wear a white or very light wedding dress.
  • Golden and pink shades accentuate blue and green eyes.
  • If you have dark eyes, you can use an extended color palette
  • Focus only on one area of the face; eyes or lips. If you use a strong lip color like red, you should tone down the eye makeup a bit and vice versa.
  • Bridal makeup is generally about choosing a simple and elegant expression.

Start by applying a flat base

After skin care, it is important to use a good primer that ensures that the makeup lays evenly on the skin and lasts longer.

Start with a concealer and apply it to the necessary areas, such as under the eyes, around the eyes, on the chin and possibly the lips.

Then apply a good foundation that gives a matte result so that the skin does not shine in pictures, that has high coverage and long lasting. This could be, for example, the L´Oréal Infallibe 24-Matte Foundation, which gives a fresh feeling and lasts up to 24 hours.

Finish with a good powder that also has high coverage and long lasting properties.

Get a fresh look with highlighter

A good highlighter accentuates what you want on the face, adds a lot of shine and is essential for a wedding where a lot of photos are taken. Highlighters come in different shades, so you need to find one that suits your skin tone. If you are in doubt about the color, you can’t go wrong with a light highlighter as it gives a fresh glow. For example, try E.l.f. Highlighter in the color Moonlight Pearls, which also adds some shimmer.

Apply highlighter to the bridge of the nose, under the brow bones, above the cheekbones, and just above the upper lip, or anywhere you want to highlight facial features

Eyes

Start by drawing your brows with a brow pencil, both around the brows to shape them and to pull them up. Then use a brow gel to shape and set the brows. This will also ensure that your eyebrows last all day and night.

A good tip is to color the brows with brow color a week before the wedding day. This way they will be easy to draw during the day.

As mentioned, we recommend light and bright shades for the eyes, especially if you have light eyes. If you are brave and have a handle on the techniques, you can easily turn to a color palette like E.l.f. Eyeshadow Palette, which comes in delicious nude and earth tones.

If you want to keep it simpler and perhaps have little time during the day, you can simply use a nice light eyeshadow, preferably with a bit of shimmer like NYX Baked Shadows.

When it comes to the eyelashes, you can either choose a mascara that gives both fullness and length. A good tip is to use a waterproof mascara as you can expect to shed a tear or two during the ceremony. If you want extra length and volume, you can also use false eyelashes. These either have to be applied with glue or come with glue already included.

Lips

Most of the time, the bride chooses a light and neutral color for the lips as it goes best with a natural and classic look. However, you can easily use a light pink or peach shade depending on your eye color. Some like a matte lipstick as it lasts all day. But others opt for a glossy lip gloss as it adds freshness to your look and looks really good in pictures.

Cheeks

In addition to a highlighter to accentuate the cheekbones, it is often also nice to add some color to the cheeks with a natural and light blush and create a fresh look.

Feel free to use a very soft pink or peach color to highlight the cheeks a little.

NYX Powder Blush and add a little color for a natural result. Start by applying a little blush and then build up the intensity so you don’t get too much on the cheeks.

Use a finishing spray to ensure the makeup lasts

A setting spray is just as important as a primer as it keeps the makeup in place and ensures that it lasts longer and does not fade.
