Are you often tired or do you have sore muscles for no reason? You may have a vitamin D deficiency and you can read here what symptoms this can cause and where you can find your vitamins in your diet.
D-Vitamin
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that can actually be produced in the skin itself, BUT on average we consume far less than the recommended amount.
A fat-soluble vitamin is a vitamin that CANNOT be excreted in urine like water – soluble vitamins can. It is important to consume the right amount of vitamin D because it promotes the absorption of calcium and is therefore an important element for our bone and dental health.
If you get too much vitamin D, it accumulates in our fat depot and in the worst case can result in poisoning. Therefore, it is just as important not to overdose as it is to get the right amount.
In the worst case, a vitamin D deficiency can lead to tooth decay, osteoporosis, muscle weakness, bone fractures and type 1 diabetes.
Recent research also shows that a deficiency in this vitamin can affect diseases such as depression, sclerosis, schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s.
Recommendation
The recommended daily dose for men and women is 7.5 micrograms.
Children and the elderly over 60 years of age, pregnant women or breastfeeding women are advised to consume a little more, namely 10 micrograms.
Where is vitamin D found?
You can find vitamin D in your diet. Good sources are fat (margarine, oil and butter), eggs, meat and fatty fish.
In addition to diet, the body can produce the vitamin in the skin itself through exposure to sunlight, but in winter it is almost impossible to produce enough of it.
If the skin is often completely covered, you have very dark skin or you are vegan, it is especially important to take vitamin D through a dietary supplement.
